Frequently asked questions
What is the import duty on silver jewellery from India to New Zealand?
Silver jewellery is classified under HS 7113.11. Into New Zealand it pays 2.5% duty, on consignments above NZ$1,000. 2.5% duty on consignments over NZ$1,000. The India New Zealand agreement is concluded and will remove this once it is in force. GST of 15% applies on the goods, shipping and duty; below NZ$1,000 it is collected by the seller rather than at the border. Customs charges an import transaction fee on consignments that are assessed.
Is there VAT or GST on jewellery imported into New Zealand?
Yes. GST of 15% is charged on the customs value plus the duty. A business registered for the tax can usually reclaim it, which means the real cost of importing is the duty and the fees alone.
Who pays the duty, the buyer or the seller?
It depends on the shipping terms. If Argentia ships delivered duty paid, we pay the duty and any tax at the border and nothing is due when the courier delivers. If the order ships on standard terms, the courier bills the buyer before handing over the parcel. For New Zealand we quote both ways so you can see the difference.
How accurate is this calculator?
It uses the rates in force on 4 October 2026 and the fee schedules published by customs and the main couriers. Rates change, couriers change their fees, and classification can differ by piece. Treat it as an estimate and confirm with a licensed broker before you ship.
