Is silver jewelry waterproof?

Waterproof is the jewelry word of the year. Here is what it means for real silver, in the shower, the pool and the sea.

Short version: water on its own does not hurt silver. You can shower and wash your hands in it. What harms it is chlorine, from pools, hot tubs and bleach, and the sulfur that causes tarnish. Sterling darkens quickly; Argentium resists tarnish far better and has no plating to wear off, so it is the closest real silver gets to everyday, wear-it-always jewelry.

What "waterproof" actually means

On a jewelry label, waterproof usually means the piece will not change colour or rust when it gets wet. Most jewelry sold that way is stainless steel, often with a gold-coloured coating, because steel contains no silver and does not tarnish.

Silver is different. It does not rust, and plain water does not damage it. What it does is react with sulfur, slowly, which is the dark film people call tarnish. So the useful question about silver is less "can it get wet" and more "what will it react with".

Sterling against Argentium

Sterling silver is 92.5 per cent silver and 7.5 per cent copper. The copper is what darkens fastest, and it is why a sterling chain left in a bathroom drawer can turn yellow, then grey, then black.

Argentium replaces some of that copper with germanium. The germanium forms a thin, invisible layer on the surface that slows tarnish down a great deal. Argentium 960 is 96 per cent silver, more than sterling. The jeweller Cynthia Eid sums it up well in her guide to the metal: no silver is tarnish-proof, but Argentium can be made highly tarnish resistant.

That is why Argentium is the practical choice for pieces worn every day, through showers and workouts, rather than saved for occasions.

Why plating matters more than water

A lot of sterling jewelry is plated with rhodium so it looks bright white in the shop. The plating wears, usually first on the parts that rub, like the inside of a ring or the edges of a pendant. Once it wears through, the sterling underneath tarnishes and the piece looks patchy.

Argentium needs no plating. The white colour goes all the way through, so there is nothing to wear off. For something worn daily, that matters more than whether it can get wet.

How to look after it

  1. Take it off before swimming. Pools, hot tubs and bleach are the real enemy of any silver.
  2. Dry it after the shower. Water left in a clasp or under a stone is what dulls a piece first.
  3. Lotion and perfume first, jewelry last. Both speed up tarnish.
  4. Store it dry, ideally in a small sealed bag, away from the bathroom.
  5. Wipe it with a soft silver cloth now and then. Avoid harsh dips, which strip the surface.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shower with silver jewelry?

Yes. Water on its own does not harm silver. Dry it afterwards, especially clasps and the area under any stones, and keep shampoo and body lotion off it where you can, since some contain sulfur compounds that speed up tarnish.

Can I swim in silver jewelry?

Take it off. Chlorine in pools and hot tubs attacks silver, including Argentium, and can dull or pit the surface. After sea swimming, rinse silver in fresh water and dry it.

Does Argentium silver tarnish in water?

Water itself does not tarnish it. Argentium resists tarnish far better than sterling because of the germanium layer on its surface, though no silver is completely tarnish-proof. It cleans up with a soft cloth.

Is sterling silver waterproof?

It will not rust or come to harm from plain water, but it tarnishes faster than Argentium, especially in humid places and with sweat. If it is plated, the plating wears with daily wear and exposes the sterling underneath.

What jewelry can I wear all the time?

Stainless steel and titanium will not tarnish at all but are not precious metals. Solid gold does not tarnish. Among silvers, Argentium is the best choice for everyday wear, since it resists tarnish and has no plating to wear off.
