Tarnish-free silver jewelry: what actually holds up

Tarnish-free and waterproof are the biggest jewelry searches of the year. Nearly every supplier answers them with steel. Here is the case for real silver, including what it cannot do.

Short version: no silver is completely tarnish-proof, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling steel. What you can buy is silver that tarnishes far more slowly than sterling and needs no plating. That is Argentium. Whether you want one piece for yourself or a range for your shop, it sits where people now want to be: real precious metal, low maintenance, and a price well below gold.

Customers have been burned by cheap jewelry that turns green or black in a month, and they now search for the fix by name. Trade analysts describe "waterproof jewelry" as one of the strongest marketing terms of 2026, and interest in non-tarnish jewelry peaks every December, when it sells as an everyday gift.

The supply side has answered almost entirely with one material: 316L stainless steel, usually with a gold-coloured PVD coating. It is cheap, it does not tarnish, and it is fine for fast fashion. It is also everywhere, at a few dollars a piece, which makes it very hard to build a brand on.

The honest part: silver always tarnishes, eventually

Tarnish is not rust. It is silver reacting with sulfur in the air, in skin, in lotions and in some foods. Sterling silver contains 7.5 per cent copper, which speeds the reaction up and turns the surface black.

The jeweller and teacher Cynthia Eid puts it plainly in her guide to working with Argentium: neither pure silver nor any silver alloy is tarnish-proof, but Argentium can be made highly tarnish resistant. The germanium in the alloy reacts with oxygen to form a thin, invisible oxide layer on the surface, which slows the reaction that blackens sterling. Pieces stay bright for much longer, and when they do dull, a cloth brings them back.

That distinction matters if you sell it. Promise tarnish-proof and you will get returns. Promise silver that needs far less care than sterling and you will be telling the truth.

Is it waterproof?

Water on its own does not harm Argentium. Wearing it in the shower or washing up is fine. Chlorine is the exception. Pools, hot tubs and bleach attack silver and the protective layer, so pieces come off before swimming.

We would rather say that than call it waterproof and have your customer find out in a hotel pool. A care card that says it straight builds more trust than a marketing claim that fails.

Who it suits

Anyone who wants silver they can actually wear every day. If your sterling keeps turning dark in the drawer, or your plated pieces have gone two-tone at the edges, Argentium is the simple fix. We make single pieces to order for customers in the US, the UK and elsewhere, in your size and with your choice of stone.

Demi-fine brands. This is the fastest-growing part of the jewelry market, sitting between fashion and fine. Its buyers want real material and everyday wear, and gold vermeil wears through. Argentium gives them solid silver that stays bright.

Retailers moving up from steel. If your steel range sells but sits in the same price band as everyone on the marketplace, a silver line gives you something they cannot copy at a few dollars.

Brands priced out of gold. Gold rose sharply over 2025 and into 2026. A real silver range with lab-grown diamonds or moissanite keeps the look within reach of your customer.

With stones

Argentium can be heat hardened after casting, so prongs hold properly under a stone. We set lab-grown and natural diamonds, moissanite and coloured stones in house, so a tarnish-resistant silver piece does not have to be plain.

If you are ordering for Christmas

Every piece is made to order, whether it is one ring as a gift or a range for your shop, so you can choose the size and the stone. Allow for making, then shipping and customs. For a December gift or December selling, that means ordering in October or early November. Our import duty calculator shows the landed cost in your country before you commit, including duty and tax.

Frequently asked questions

Is there such a thing as tarnish-free silver jewelry?

Not completely. No silver alloy is tarnish-proof, including fine silver. What exists is silver that tarnishes far more slowly and far more lightly than sterling. Argentium is the best known: germanium in the alloy forms a thin, invisible oxide layer on the surface that slows the reaction with sulfur in the air, which is what turns sterling black. Pieces stay bright much longer and clean up with a cloth.

What is the difference between tarnish-free jewelry and tarnish-resistant silver?

Most jewelry sold as tarnish-free is stainless steel, often coated in gold-colored PVD. Steel does not tarnish because it contains no silver. Tarnish-resistant silver is real silver, usually Argentium, that has been made to resist tarnish rather than replaced with another metal. One is a cheaper metal that does not change colour. The other is a precious metal that changes colour much more slowly than sterling.

Is Argentium silver waterproof?

Water on its own does not harm Argentium, so washing hands or wearing it in the shower is fine. Chlorine is different. Swimming pools, hot tubs and household bleach attack silver and the protective layer on Argentium, so pieces should come off before swimming. That honest answer is worth giving to your own customers, because steel brands that call everything waterproof tend to get the returns later.

Why choose Argentium over PVD stainless steel for a jewelry range?

Price and positioning. PVD steel is cheap and very durable, and it suits fast fashion at low price points. Argentium is a precious metal that can be marked and sold as silver, it carries the value of silver in the piece, and it needs no plating, so there is nothing to wear through. For a demi-fine range, where buyers want real material and low maintenance at a sensible price, Argentium fits where steel looks cheap and gold has become too expensive.

How do you care for Argentium silver?

Store it dry, take it off before swimming, and wipe it with a soft cloth now and then. A silver cloth with an anti-tarnish treatment adds a further protective layer. Avoid harsh dips, which strip the surface. That is the whole routine, and it is far lighter than what sterling needs.

When should I order for Christmas?

Every piece is made to order in Jaipur, so allow time for making plus shipping and customs. For a gift or for December selling, order in October or early November. Our duty calculator shows the landed cost in your country before you order, for a single piece or a whole range.
